it s not often we get an insight into the electronic music of south america, so all hail the arrival of calypso from mexico s inigo vontier and argentina s thomass jackson. the tracks featured certainly strike a unique chord, with mendrix weaving a seductive, noirish tale full of brooding guitar and slow ticking drums, while -colossio- takes on a darkwave tone on the wonderfully creepy -esta en mi-. the label bosses tackle the b side, with jackson s -fantomas- sporting a sharper dancefloor sensibility without ever resorting to obvious tropes. vontier rounds the ep out with the weirdo boogie throwdown of -namaste-, sure to pique the interest of anyone locked into the sound coming out of the speakers.

making a splash with rs019 is a newcomer called mallard. discovered by bradley after being front and centre for almost every rs dance since 2016, the south london based producer and multi-instrumentalist makes a serious first impression with his debut ep ‘verte’.
currently studying jazz double-bass at trinity school of music, mallard’s productions demonstrate a keen ear for groove with a level of musicality rarely heard in electronic productions. at just 20 years old, he has already developed a unique sound palette and prodigious production style set to make him a name we will only hear more of in the years to come.

an original copy of the brasileira lp by brazilian singer maria rita stumpf has been on top of collectors and music lovers wishlist for the past couple of years, since cântico brasileiro no 3 (kamaiura)- broke out and cast a spell worldwide – from japan to brazil, from norway to south africa, everybody was flabbergasted after they first heard the song, and each and every time they heard it again. for the lucky ones that could listen to her whole album – and get to know other gems such as lamento africano/rictus and a cidade it is clear that it is an ouvre that more people should have access to, not only an elite of listeners and connaisseurs. the good news are that the lp will be available again in its entirety in a new, glossy, loud and clear pressing released through selva discos, a new label run by augusto olivani and millos kaiser (the dj/production duo known as selvagem) in partnership with jd twitch s optimo music. it s a legit reissue overviewed by maria rita stumpf herself, the music being remastered from the remaining dat tape of the original release and artwork faithfully updated by brazilian design studio colletivo, featuring liner notes by the singer/songwriter.

gidge is a production duo consisting of jonatan nilsson and ludvig stolterman. based in the northern parts of sweden, gidge quickly built a solid fan base with releases of their albums autumn bells, lnlnn and lulin. the music of gidge seems to affect their audience in an emotional way, which eventually resulted in the duo taking the top spot as best new artist at xlr8rs readers poll, as well as having the 3lps ending up on numerous end of year lists. their main source of inspiration is the vast, snow-covered woodlands of the north. gidge have for instance recorded all of their percussions in the forest, using only the sticks and rocks that can be found there. for seoul though came about after the duo went on a trip through asia, and spent a number of days in the south korean capital. they fell in love with seoul, and later on created this two-part hymn for the giant city. applescal created a remix for the track, which you can listen on the b side.

the 04am a-side contains two south-african 80 s bubblegum tracks, revamped by young dj and producer perdu. he provided the tracks with delicate intros and rearranged them with new percussion, synths and deeper basslines. on the flip afrobot delivers two kind of new beat cuts, making the originals more abstract by some heavy chopping, reducing the amount of samples used, and adding disco breaks to the track jungle. handstamped with another drawing by frank koedood.

south african house and synth-funk from the kwaito era by the legendary senyaka kekana. the unexpected deep house jam bayanyonyoba (1993) and the illustrious soul song dont judge me bad (1987) are big rh favorites. original copies are absolutely impossible to find, now released on 12inch for the first time. beautiful sleeve by stenze quo! esa williams i had the pleasure of performing alongside senyaka at the alexander theatre, johannesburg back in 2012 which would have probably been his last most iconic gig before his passing in 2015. these two tracks really showcase the sounds of south africa around the early to late 80’s, the influences from american synth pop and house that would then lead later into many of these records being played at the wrong speed which ultimately became the original kwaito sound from south africa

say you love me wasn’t “om” alec khaoli’s first solo recording but the 1985 ep solidified the bass player and songwriter’s standing as one of south africa’s most consistently innovative pop auteurs. he built a career on ubiquitous rock, pop and soul hits with groundbreaking bands like the beaters, harari and umoja. but khaoli’s seemingly endless fountain of music continued outside these ensembles, where he usually played bass and contributed songwriting and vocals.

the silverlining dubs series marches on with this set of three rare remixes by the south londoner. the a-side features silverlining s outright monster of a dub of the inhabitants -the truth and a lie- with jayson walker of vocals, followed by the warm baseline heavy groove of g-spot by tokyo s dog with the groove lights and on the flip, a whole side dedicated to his highly sought-after remix of the mingers. together this cooks up one swirling broth of straight up underground house music with sprinklings, in equal measures, of intellect and party spirit!

the second single from the cultures of soul compilation, boogie breakdown: south african disco 1980 to 1984, benjamin ball’s -i just keep dancing- is a synth and drum machine-fueled track that also reveals ball as one of south africa’s earliest rappers. boston-bred djs, soul clap provide an excellent rework of the track adding some big room club flavor to the track for djs around the world. soul clap are the globe trotting dj duo of eli goldstein and charles levine who ve done everything from headlining clubs in ibiza to creating dj mix albums for fabric and dj kicks to making records with george dj/producer and co-founder of the running back label, gerd janson provides two funked up rerubs of the track, one with vocals and one without. licensed directly from the artist and housed in a custom disco sleeve these edits won t be available on the compilation.

amsterdam producers and good friends kaap and scott franka have come together to start a new label and live act: working titles. kaap is best known as the label boss of tape cassette label yield, scott just debuted with his first 12” on quartet series. together they perform primarily hardware based live sessions. for their label they improvise, jam and record to press these takes only on vinyl. the idea is to capture the real, raw and authentic improvised moments as soon as possible after they happen, hence the name working titles. this first vinyl release features the wt001 and wt002 outtakes on one disc. these sessions were recorded by the pair in an abandoned cabin in the woods in the south of holland, surrounded by nature.

what started as an idea 5 years ago now becomes reality with the release of saigon supersound vol.1, compiled by jan hagenkötter. a compilation about the story of a musical era in vietnam that was almost lost, made of tracks from 1965 to 1975, the so-called golden music period in the south of vietnam, where under difficult circumstances – a lively pop culture had developed. this period is characterized by the fusion of vietnamese music with western pop music. the compilation includes some tunes reissued for the very first time since they ve been released originally.

for the past four decades, a growing cult of soul music collectors have sought two obscure lps and a handful of extremely rare 45s released on the vanity record label lad productions, inc. between the late seventies and the mid eighties by the mysterious south side chicago singer/song writer larry dixon. larry s raw songs capture the transition from r&b to boogie-down as disco was rapidly becoming extinct. they also perfectly illustrate larrys ability to overcome his environment and discrimination, transcended by his determination to write and produce music. with the support of his faithful musicians, larry s success was only hindered by lack of airplay and promotion, but his talent shines through. this is the story of larry dixon, his label lad productions, inc., and his friends and family throughout four decades of music in chicagos toughest neighborhoods. jerome derradji is proud to reactivate past due records the boogie funk division of still music to release this fantastic archive what many consider to be the holy grail of chicago funk, boogie and soul.

northsouth is a new london-based label, started between 3 friends. this first release sees frankfrurts chris geschwindner take charge on the north side and henry hyde on the south. each artist has provided 2 tracks, showcasing different sounds in their production styles and is a strong start for the new imprint.

* nan kolé, producer, dj and head of influential label on-the-rise, gqom oh!, returns to black acre for his debut proper with ‘bayefal’, after first collaborating with nervous horizon’s wallwork on his ‘facts / fyah’ 12” at the back end of 2016. * originally from rome, although now a resident of london, nan kolé has been a major player in the expansion of durban’s gqom sound after discovering it in early 2015. through his label, gqom oh!, he honed in on a network of south african producers operating out of durban, unlocking the keys to a world of music largely untapped by audiences outside of southern and western africa. * ‘bayefal’, he explains, was made while still living in rome and was inspired by a group he formed called pepesoup, which consisted of an italo-liberian singer, karima 2g, and senegalese percussionist and singer, moustapha mbengue. “for me, he (mbengue) was a mentor and taught me a lot spiritually but also mentally”, kolé explains, “and without his hard work i wouldn’t be here for sure. this track is dedicated to him, as he s a muslim bayefal.” a joyous, steadfast drum workout made in the carnival spirit, ‘bayefal’ also serves as an ode to his love for both west african rhythms and more specifically, the gqom sound. * on the flip, ‘malumz’ — backed up with two dark, brooding remixes by durban’s citizen boy and crew, formation boyz — is another track rooted in personal experience. “malumz is a tribute to my gqom oh! family”, kolé explains. “they call me malumz, which in zulu means ‘uncle’. the first time citizen boy called me ‘malumz’, it was overwhelming — i felt a change in my relationship with all the guys, because they started to treat me more as a family member, which meant a lot.” * the original mix, a stark, pulsing drum-track dotted with playful whistles and bleepy sampling again celebrates kolé’s fascination with the gqom sound, while first citizen boy and then formation boyz flip ‘malumz’ with harsher, grittier tones and crunching, industrial textures.

thrice is nice for dimitri the brooklynite-by-way-of-paris, who comes correct with his 3rd 3-packer of disco edit deelite for rnt! filling up the a-side is kettle america, a cheeky bit of south-of-the border uptempo disco funk. i knead you is a stomping and sermonizing version of a cherished classic, completely redone with a chorus of handclaps and gospel piano, and the record finishes with without rob for some re-touched dancefloor doo-wop gold!

talk about the legends of house and kenny dope gonzalez holds one of the undisputed seats in the gallery. since breaking out of brooklyn as new york house began to dominate the 1990s the dope man rose to the very top with masters at work, gaining a peerless reputation as beatmaker, producer and dj. originally brought to strictly rhythm as a teenager by todd terry, he became one of the key producers in forging the strictly sound through releases by the untouchables and total kaos, and his work with louie vega on the sole fusion and hardrive projects. back home at strictly with a fresh new production (for the first time since 1999), kenny teams up with another legend of house, roland clark (aka south st player) for talk dirty, a rumbustious, risque excursion that sees clark delivering one of his trademark monologues over kenny s perfect beats. it s a fitting sound for the 900 number the landmark nine hundredth single released on strictly rhythm

afrika bambaataa, rapper, producer, dj from the south bronx, new york. afrika bambaataa is one of the originators of breakbeat djing and is respectfully known as the godfather of zulu nation and amen ra of hip hop culture. in 2007 has been nominated for induction into the rock hall of fame and in 2008 he has been honored by the bronx museum of arts. afrika bambaataa’s long career is pointed by many hits and masterpieces such as reckless, unity, just get up and dance and pupunanny. countless collaborations with artists such as ub40, james brown, boy george, leftfield just to name few of them. afrika bambaataa has recorded with many labels from tommy boy to capitol records and profile but it is with the italian label dfc (expanded music) that he has releases most of his recordings. bring it up is the new release on dfc label produced by dj/producer paul carpenter. this release includes three versions in big room/edm style along with a mega-mix and a full acapella collection of all previous recordings released by bambaataa on dfc label. two lyrics videos come to support the release.
